8th (Sunday)
Talked to Sanaam this afternoon
Myle describing a visit to a
shopping mall in Saigon, with a
large rat running around inside
a glass counter. Also talked with
an East Indian girl... showed her
the portraits. Spanish Banks this
evening

Wimbledon tennis, in bed, this
morning... Nice to see Ivanisevic
win

Hot, muggy weather continues

11th (Wednesday)   [The Destiny of Art]

12th (Thursday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Showed Sanaam the portrait this
evening. Seemed to like it okay
While she was busy with a customer,
showed the portrait to a friend of
hers. Works on the other side of
the floor. Her family is from
Pakistan. Her name is Humaira
Suggested to them I do a double
portrait

13th (Friday)   [The Destiny of Art]

14th (Saturday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Nice chat with Mun Jung, whose sister
isn't coming now until September

15th (Sunday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Showed Humaira some of the artwork
A very sweet, gentle, interesting
girl who was very generous with her
compliments, & encouraging. When a
friend of hers suggested it was
nearly impossible to get into Vanc
galleries, H suggested I show my
work in Toronto or New York

16th-17th (Monday-Tuesday)
'Everything You Always Wanted to Know
About Sex' late at night, sipping
sherry. Cool & rainy at Majuba

18th (Wednesday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Finished off the outline this
afternoon

19th (Thursday)
Some nice banter with Karam. In the
afternoon had a long talk with
Humaira. Dropped off some film at
London Drugs for Myle, who gave me
her email address. Trying to get her
weight down to 90 lbs. Said she
'wants to look like this', & sucked
in her cheeks. Pepsi at Seymour
Room, looking over book on Ernest
Haas

20th (Friday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Finished off the outline this
afternoon

21st (Saturday)   [The Destiny of Art]

22nd (Sunday)   [The Destiny of Art]

23rd (Monday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Nice little talk with H - & a
Filipino girl, who was quite charming,
warned me not to visit Mindinao

24th (Tuesday)   [The Destiny of Art]

25th (Wednesday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Shari describing how she got food
poisoning at Ken's Chinese food on
Keefer. Suspects that it's the
noodles. Has a frozen sample of the
incriminating evidence in her fridge

26th (Thursday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Humaira wants me to draw a veil across
her face in the portrait. If it doesn't
look right, she said, I can always 'erase
it.' Spanish Banks this evening. Two girls
tossing a football, awkward & foxy at the
same time, their feet kicking dust out
of the sand, which glowed golden in the
setting sun

27th (Friday)   [The Destiny of Art]

August
1st (Wednesday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Cool & rainy

2nd (Thursday)   [The Destiny of Art]

3nd (Friday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Told the Mun Jung is travelling in Europe!?
New girl is from Taejon. She sat down at
the table, & I showed her the portraits
Picked 'Nabila' as being the best, which
was a surprise. Asked if I was going to
the Gay Parade

7th (Tuesday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Showed portraits to the French/Canadian
girl, whose name is Julye Charron. She
has a compelling personality & impressive
intellect. Picked 'Mun Jung' as being the
most interesting, and that the background
color was perfect. Thought that Myle looked
more mature in the portrait than she really
is, 'that she hasn't got there yet.'

8th (Wednesday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Fairly hot, & breezy

9th (Thursday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Shari dreams of 'an enormous rat that
was intensely preoccupied with its left
underarm'. First visit to UBC since March,
on a perfect clear afternoon with a cool
breeze. Sorting things out,

re-establishing some ideas, & making a
list of things to work on, & then a
pleasant visit to the Barn Cafe

10th (Friday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Two letters from Lisa! - this afternoon
Girl from Taejon working with a new girl,
from China. Sitting down at the table
with them, learning to say 'manure' in
Korean, & the new girl writing out, in
Chinese, a phrase Myle used earlier in
the day, & then teaching me how to say
it in Chinese

11th (Saturday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Showed Julie (not Julye) all the large
drawings at the table, upstairs at the
Market. Picked 'Our Precious Science'
Her reactions were sometimes amusing
Visited Shari & Eliza this evening. S
working out Mensa problems, while E
was drawing an octupus, that she
colored blue. Nice ice cream, with
rasp sauce, served in a clear glass
cup. Walking back through Yaletown, on
a HOT, humid night

12th (Sunday)   [The Destiny of Art]

13th (Monday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Saw 'Apocalypse Now: Redux' at the
Park Theatre, on a very hot, humid
afternoon. In the summer evening,
walked through streets I rarely travel,
thinking about future art, in
particular a large drawing called
'Sister'

15th (Wednesday)
At UBC, talking with a girl from
Panama with a cute face, dressed
cool, smelled good, with a delightful
accent, who was studying Maritime Law

16th (Thursday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Talking to the back of Myle's head,
who wouldn't turn around because of
something on her face. Short little
talk with Julye (not Julie) discussing
that pathetic artist (exhb'd on
Hornby) who does the faces & torsos
Admires Georgia O'Keefe

17th (Friday)   [The Destiny of Art]

18th (Saturday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Developing an idea for a large work,
working title, 'Madonna of the Oil
Fields'

19th (Sunday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Another dramatic PGA, won by Toms

21st (Tuesday)   [The Destiny of Art]

22nd (Wednesday)   [The Destiny of Art]
Cold, dark, rainy. Finished the drawing
this evening

23rd (Thursday)
Cool, dark, rainy afternoon. Tea
& scones at Shari's this evening
Showed her some of the commercial
art, which she understoold better
than anyone

29th (Wednesday)
Saw 'Curse of the Jade Scorpion'
downtown this afternoon. Girl on
the Hastings bus, sitting with her
legs up on the seat in front of
her long-sleeved shirt, pants cut
just below the knees. Reading a book,
she had the most perfectly shaped
legs. Taking some good shots at
the PNE. A beautiful sky streaked
with dragon clouds. On the bus
home a beautiful Korean girl,
with a pony tail & a light red
jacket
