my first artistic effort, in wax crayon.
safe to say I showed zero potential,
and it stayed that way until one evening ten years later
it suddenly came together. In school
I seem to remember the girl who sat in front of me
drew in the tiny elephant in red
and probably added the front legs & horizon line too.
another kid showed the way
an elephant's trunk is SUPPOSED to look.
the apple tree in the background was probably mine.
to this day I've never drawn another elephant,
or an apple tree either for that matter.
1st (Tuesday)
Morning in Abbotsford, evening at Lorane's, who rather
liked the 'Amex Pastel' & 'Meltdown'. Nice conversation,
lovely meal, & enjoyable time playing poker, Texas hold'em
2nd (Wednesday) [Portrait of a Girl in Green Satin Sleeves]
At Denny's this evening with Ady, who'd had her hair done earlier
in the day, & looked quite striking. Told me that my face looked
fuller, & I seemed more relaxed. Said she hoped to look as good as
me when SHE was 54. Told her I was definetly going to miss her,
which will be for a few months at least. Postcard from Yuko
4th (Friday) [Portrait of a Girl in Green Satin Sleeves]
Talking to Vesna, returned from Palm Springs. Told me she's thinking
'Meltdown', which she prefers to 'The U. Fire'. Thinks the background
reminds her more of a sunset than anything. Sawaro in an unusual
jacket, with a fur-lined hood, which sweetly framed her face
6th (Sunday) [Portrait of a Girl in Green Satin Sleeves]
Finished the Clapton biography
9th (Wednesday) [Portrait of a Girl in Green Satin Sleeves]

Girls at Davie & Bute shouting out 'Free Hugs!', for what I don't
know. Baeta saying she feel asleep at English classes, in Chinatown

Seahawks/Packers in a snowstorm
14th (Monday)
Talked to Saisai this morning. Told her I'd give her the portrait, if
she promised never to sell it. English Bay in the dusk. An awesome,
frigid wind. Grey/black clouds on the horizon, the waves as large as
I've seen them there, close one behind the other, thundering into
the shore. Quite surreal
