she asked. Told her of course, I want to
do 'Girl from Borneo'. Said she'd give
some thought what to wear. North Shore
veiled in misty clouds & snow, bathed in
a radiant pink light around four in the
afternoon. Tough loss for Seattle

14th (Monday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Trace of snow on the ground this morning
Myle called while I was walking along Burnaby
'I am so bored.' Called just after seven,
saying she was tired & feeling ill
15th (Tuesday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Text from Myle : 'Woke up at 7 with a
migraine :('
16th (Wednesday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Myle called from the Food Court, wondering if
she should have a salad roll. Late this
afternoon, a delicate pink light on the snows
& mists of the North Shore mtns. 'Finished
the 'Steve Jobs' book
17th (Thursday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Gave Reanne a large chocolate bar, a belated
birthday gift. Described to her the next three
drawings, 'Lance Armstrong Nike', 'Girl from
Borneo', & 'Scorpion'. After hearing
description of the outline for 'Scorpion', she
said : 'It will be us who will destroy
ourselves in the end.' Showed Taiwanese girl
the portrait of Sheila, which startled her a
little; & the 'Fuji Seasons' (picked 'Summer
Fuji'). Charming girl. Her name is Ariel. Long
talk with Myle on the bus down Victoria Drive,
& on Skytrain until it disappeared into the
tunnel. Pieces of ice still in the Court House
fountain
18th (Friday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Two texts from Myle before 8am saying she
slept poorly, 'and I had a crazy dream'
Crossing the street at Georgia & Howe, is
that Ariel on the other side wearing a toque?
She smiles & waves, & I say to her passing by,
'Talk to you next week.' Lovely view of the
skyline from Seabus, the sky streaked with
lovely clouds, the sun glowing through the
veils. Visited Leigh at Capilano Mall
Showed her a number of the '29x42's, that she
really seems to understand & appreciate
Noticed for the first time she has nice cool
blue/grey eyes
19th (Saturday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Text from Myle, which began, 'Worst day
ever! I called in sick...' Spectacular pink
sunset. Talked to Laura for the first time
in awhile, telling me how much she likes the
fog
20th (Sunday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Bought Myle a copa banana. Described how sick
she was last night & this morning, barely
able to come in today. Eve saying 2013 will
be the 'Year of Art'. Showing me where she
was born in Borneo, in Brunei
21st (Monday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Yumi telling me her new London Drugs
blowdryer is extremely loud. I suggested
she buy some earplugs. Made plans to meet
on Wednesday to show her some more work
Text from Myle asking if I could help her
get some U.S. dollars on Thursday. Freezing

Market Place, as the rain poured down outside
the window. Texts from Myle at Rogers Arena

Got Myle some American money at the currency
place on Pender. Light, steady rain all day
25th (Friday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Showing Ariel a few photos of the drawings,
who's a little self-concious about giving her
opinion on art. Told me she was interested in
fashion but no aptitude for sketching out
ideas. I suggested she would look good in a
portrait, & she smiled & seemed agreeable
with the idea. Met Ady in front of the Wall
Centre, who was walking with her two sons!
She looked great in different shades of
purple. Texted Myle a couple of times, &
talked to her on the phone this evening
26th (Saturday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Cold & damp this afternoon. Oriental girl at
Harbour Centre Mall, with a lovely face & a
nice bow tie. Talked to Myle on the phone
around six. Was tired she said, but seemed
happy about working with new girl, who I'm
supposed to meet on Tuesday
27th (Sunday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Yumi telling me that she enjoyed the movie &
was impressed with the performance of
Penelope Cruz. That girl has the sweetest
demeanour. Quite a long conversation with
Reanne. Was surprised & pleased when she
told me she'd started on her version of
'Scorpion', which she's planning to do in
airbrush. Eve off sick today. Damp, cold
continues
28th (Monday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Saying 'Hello/Ko-nitch-iwa' to Yumi this
morning. Her first name isn't shortened, she
told me, & her last name is Takei. Talked to
Myle, who tells me the staff at Holt is free
to wear what colours they want next month
Suggested a pink jacket for her. Damp &
chilly. No sun
29th (Tuesday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Loaned Reanne 'Einstein for Beginners', who
looked good in a black scarf, with prints of
bald eagles on it. Myle wearing her new black
sweater, with a large collar, & big round
buttons. Working with the girl from Sears
'Do you remember Richard?' Myle asked her
'I remember you.' Very dark day, steady rain
30th (Wednesday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Learned to say 'Good morning' in Japanese
from Yumi : 'O - hio'. Myle in black & off-
white horizontal stripes this morning
31st (Thursday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
On the bus, coming back from Abbotsford, a
text from Myle, 'Where are u?', & then 'I
forgot u were in Abbotsford! Wanted to see if
u wanted to have dinner tonight.' Admiring a
girl on the Skytrain. Getting off at Granville
Stn, got into a chat with her. Was heading to
the Penthouse she told me. Told her about
being an artist, etc... shook hands, & wished
her luck in the competition. Wonder if I'll
ever see her again?
February
1st (Friday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Fog on the fringes of downtown
2nd (Saturday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Reanne wearing a large symbolic eagle on a
bronze chain around her neck, that suggested
to me Aztec or Inca jewelry. We agree there's
more to the 'reality' than the human brain
can comprehend. Talking to Myle on the cell
walking down Seymour, the top floors of the
highrises veiled in fog. Nice chat with the
Indian girl at Harbour Centre, who has a
lovely personality. Myle called about 9
o'clock crying, about how her co-workers
were treating her. Tried to comfort her as
best I could
3rd (Sunday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Eve asking if I can send her 2 photos of
myself, with & without glasses, that
she's using for some sort of portrait,
I'm not sure what medium. Was exuding a
lot of positive energy. Learned she went
to school two years in Montreal, & was
totally surprised I didn't know what
poutine was
4th (Monday) [Scorpion of the Womb]
Talked to Myle on the phone, who wants to
call in sick tomorrow, & is wondering if
she still wants to work at Holt
Encouraging her to try part-time before
she quits. Texted me later saying she was
getting a migraine. Reanne wearing a new
piece of jewelry today. Bought her some
hot water from Starbucks. Met Yuriko at
Hastings & Hornby. Told me she was
returning to Kyushu next month. Made
plans to meet next week to show her more
of the art
5th (Tuesday)
Passing a rather attractive Oriental girl
on Burrard, frequently in the morning
Works at the UPS store. Would love to do a
portrait
6th (Wednesday)
Eating Nanaimo bars at the Market Place
counter with Yumi, while showing her a
variety of art. Impressed with her
vocabulary, her charm, & the quality of
her observations. Email from Myle at
5:32am - 'Happy Birthday Richard!'
9th (Saturday)
Reanne the first person to see 'Scorpion'
Very impressed with what she had to say,
& asked if she could write it down
sometime. Saw the scorpion as being
protective, than dangerous
10th (Sunday)
Showing Eve 'Scorpion' this afternoon. Her
first impression was that the scorpion was
'baptizing' the baby. Then it looked like
an eye to her, & then she really got
creative. 'You're developing this into a
novel,' I laughed. She had a great
suggestion for the straitjacket in 'Politics
of the Mind', which I was describing to her
friend, who is a student at Douglas College,
studying set design for plays & movies
Sunny, cool. Myle called around 9, in tears
again
11th (Monday)
Text from Myle that she had bad dreams,
her teeth were falling out & worms were
coming out of her mouth
15th (Friday)
Finished Richard Branson bio at Royal
Centre this morning, & then texted Myle
& Eve. Was able to show Ariel 'Scorpion',
and to again suggest doing a portrait,
which she seems agreeable to. Myle called
from the bus on Victoria Drive. Talked to
her until the Skytrain disappeared into
the tunnel, & then again as she was going
down the escalator at Holt. Told me her
pulse rate was going up & that she could
see Wayne at the counter. Visited Leigh
this afternoon at Capilano Mall. Was
impressed with what she had to say about
'Scorpion'. Gave her the print & the
Napoleon 'Adida' print as well. Plan to
visit her again in a couple of weeks
Sunny, mild day
18th (Monday)
Talked to Myle three or four times on
the phone, who didn't get out of bed
till two o'clock, like Eve did yesterday
Later in the afternoon, describing to
her on the phone, the interior of Sears
through an open door
'Are those round things still there?'
she asked
'The columns?' I asked. 'Well yeah,
they kind of hold up the building.'
Giggling on both ends of the line. Cold,
with a drizzle of rain
23rd (Saturday)
Finally got a chance to talk to Yana,
along with her co-worker. Told me Reanne
was off with a bad reaction to her
allergies. Both agreed that the scorpion
was an evil presence, Yana suggesting it
looked to her the scorpion wanted to
'devour' it. Also showed them the
'Seahorse as a Dimension of Time'; and
described the idea for 'The Politics of
the Mind', which Yana seemed impressed
with. Thinking she would be very good
for the 'Empress'
