Though I've tried for years, I can't seem to do
a portrait of Myle that she actually likes.
She's hated every one of them. I keep telling
her that one day when she's old she'll appreciate
them, but she's not buying it.
Okay, she may not know the difference between
Michelangelo and Modigliani, but she
is one
of the best counter managers in Canada, and the
most well-organized girl I've ever known.
She's a genius at labeling, and her
color-coded binder is a looseleaf rainbow.
But her real passion is shopping. If there's
ever a world competition for Shopping Queen,
Myle will be a serious contender for the
championship. She started skipping
classes in 7th grade to shop at Oakridge,
and it only got worse... I mean better
after that. If she ever wins the 6/49 we'll
see a world-wide shopping spree unprecedented
in history. Until then there's always Internet
shopping, and the discount shoe stores
in Seattle. - Oh yeah, and I'll never get
tired of her smile.

store on Robson, on Opening Day. Talked
to Susan for the first time since
before Xmas, & Myle told me 'as long as
I don't look fat,' & was talking about
my doing two or three portraits of her

Perfect winter afternoon. The shoreline
at English Bay, a steady breeze,
wonderfully cool & fresh, the winter
sun just above the hills of Kitsilano
Guy in a bathing suit jumps into a
pounding surf, swims a hundred yds out,
splashes around a bit, a then swims
back in
12th (Monday)
Good reaction to the portrait from
Marianna. Noticed the bamboo leaves
in the background, liked trace of a
smile, & thought (she couldn't think
of how to say it in English) her
demeanour expressed 'Have I got a
surprise for you.' An hour later I
showed it not to Myle, but a girl
she works with from Portsmouth,
England
14th (Wednesday)
At Eaton's cafeteria the portrait,
sitting on a table against the wall,
getting a lot of compliments from
the staff. Myle brings me a Coke &
sits down across from me, with a
bowl of clam chowder. Her friend
sits down a minute later, with a
dish of eggplant, describing a
scene from 'Hannibal'. Myle was
charming today
