decorater. Told me she'd have to
'schmooz', & that she wouldn't do it
Shari phones at 3 o'clock from the
pyschiatric ward, St. Pauls. A
somewhat strange visit. Shrimp &
rice with Dianne at Stepho's, Davie

stretching paper for new drawing,
while coverage of Iraq attack
played on tv

Saw 'Celebrity' with Susan. Thought
it was 'one of his best', & I have
to agree. Showed Betty 8x10 photos
Liked the Misty shot by the fence,
& the 2 Lisa 'bathtub' shots. One of
them reminded her of a 'baby in the
womb'

At the food fair on Howe, a very
affable Korean woman at the coffee
bar. At Pacific Centre Mall, a very
intriguing girl describing her trip
to Europe, a sort of art museum
junket. Mentioned Vermeer to her

against vivid blue/black clouds &
sky. Reading Monet at Bread Garden,
while sipping freshly squeezed

to Bojangles with Diane, & then saw
'Home Fries' at Denman Theatre

At dusk, from south-west balcony of
Burrard Bridge, view of a beautiful
sky: a thin veil of mist across the
West End & downtown skyline, the
General Hospital standing out like
a Tower of Babel, with a sky of
greyish/blues, & above a myriad
pattern of tiny clouds, like
tongues of pink flame turning
gradually into embers of burning

Dark, heavy rain. Picked up Kodachrome
in Burnaby. Nice to see Carol again
Finished drawing this evening, with a
little help from Betty, who suggested
a colour for the 'passpourtot'. Told
me how much she liked the Madonna
documentary. Didn't agree with her
She replied, 'That is not so, Reechard.'

Saw 'Elizabeth' with Risako at 5th Ave
Met girl on the bus this afternoon,
who I was trying to meet this morning
Has an intriguing smile & a wonderful
personality. Challenge is to meet her
again in the not too distant future
13th (Wednesday)
Dark afternoon, with heavy rain. At
Dunsmuir & Granville a clown with
multi-coloured hair strumming on a
badminton racquet, as the crowd flowed
by him through the rain. On Cordova,
near Abbott woman hurrying
through the rain, a blanket or shawl
around her, a cat sprawled across her
shoulders

Developing ideas for the next drawing,
'Winter Fuji'. Nice, sunny warm
afternoon. Showed blonde girl at
London Drugs, 'Urban Desert Mirage'
Was quite excited. Has a very charming
personality

Saw Star Trek movie with Diane at
Denman Cinema. Met Andrea at Robson &
Burrard. 'When's your movie coming
out?' She's working at Milestones

Dropped in on Betty, & was there for
about 2 hrs. Met a Russian artist
named Sergio, & intriguing woman who
has the store next door. B had me do
this little 'test' & then persuaded
me to go with her to get it analysed
It turned out to be interesting
'Factory Girl' made a great
impression, & she told me that Betty
was 'very fond of me'
19th (Tuesday)
Met 'Tuesday' girl at W. Van bus
stop on Georgia. She's very friendly
& very insecure at the same time. She
likes poetry (Walt Whitman & Ancient
Greek) but kept saying her own
writing was 'terrible, terrible'

Dropped in at ABC, but Jenn was off
sick. Heavy rain this afternoon

Annual birthday dinner with Annie &
friends, at a German restaurant at
33rd & Victoria. After dinner a
'carnival' upstairs. Clown with
bright yellow hair, a Boris Yeltsin
clone, & a German polka band doing
a version of 'Proud Mary'

Met Peggy on Comox. Told me about
plans to visit Australia. Told her
I'd had my usual tea at Robson
Market. She joked about it being a
good place to 'pick up Oriental
women'

Gave Jenn the finished photos of
'Factory Girl'. She looked as
pretty as I've ever seen her with
her hair tied back in a pony tail,
her face still a little tanned
from the Mexican sun

Another great visit. Showed her a
slide of 'Autumn Fuji', & the shots
of Misty. She has a great eye,
picking the one I would have picked
for the next 8X10. Was impressed
with 'Stardust Memories', which I'd
lent her. An interesting Russian
girl working at the store, from a
place on the Black Sea. At Homer &
Hastings late this afternoon, dark,
raining. A girl in bright white
jacket asked me if I knew where
the entrance to Vanc Film School
was. (the old Royal Bank, which
was being renovated) 'I think it's
right there, across the street
I'm not positive, but I'm pretty
sure.' 'Great,' she replied,
'Thanks sweetie.' She was kinda
cute actually, looked like that
girl who used to work at Safeway

Visited Betty for 2 hrs late this
afternoon. Had a great discussion
about Rodin, & Camille Claudel
Showed me shots of her sister,
who is VERY attractive, &
described her adventure driving a
speedboat the night of the
fireworks, which was apparently
quite a joyride
