This work was one of two drawings
with a common theme, suggested by
Reanne Seenath. The idea was for
each of us to interpret the concept
of an oriental horse, which intrigued
me right away.
7th (Friday)
Mostly clear, with a chilly wind. Walking down an
alley north from Broadway, in the twilight. Girl
with a large hat, long coat & unusual high heels,
walking a small white terrier. Another nice chat
with Korean girl at Naru. Said she thought I
seemed quite interested in Korean culture - but
her mostly I should have said
10th (Monday)
Talking with Eve, who told me she was preparing a
series of small watercolors. Her ideas seem to be
quite good. Met Vesna at the door, who showed me
some snowshoes she'd bought
11th (Tuesday) [Oriental Horses]
Began snowing this evening about eight. Exchanged
text message with Kiyeon
12th (Wednesday) [Oriental Horses]
Showed Korean girl at Naru a few of the portraits
Briefly described my idea for 'Empress', told her
how much I liked her silk blouses, & hinted I'd
like to have her in the drawing. Reanne telling me
she'd been terribly sick with the flu for a week, &
that she's started her horse, which will be mostly
b&w, with some blue. Nice talk with Eve, who is
originally from Edmonton & hates the cold, she told
me
13th (Thursday) [Oriental Horses]
Tea with Kiyeon at Bread Garden, & then cheeseburgers
at DQ on Denman, where she used to work. Helped her
out with her English assignment, & she taught me a
little Korean
14th (Friday) [Oriental Horses]
Gave Reanne some birthday chocolate bars, described
what I'd done on the drawing, & showed her 'Girl
from Saigon' collages. 'Who's the little girl?' she
asked. Told her to look closely. 'Minori?' she asked
'Myle?' 'Right.' - 'No way!' she said. Sent Kiyeon a
text message. Texted back saying she'd call later
Photographed the eyes of the Korean girl at Naur for
the drawing. 'Let me see! Let me see!' she said,
after the shots were taken. Thanked her for helping
out. 'My pleasure,' she replied. Comfortably warm,
with light rain in the morning
15th (Saturday) [Oriental Horses]
With Kiyeon upstairs at Robson Market, drinking
Korean corn tea, helping her construct sentences, &
learning some Korean vowels & consonants
16th (Sunday) [Oriental Horses]
Rainy, mild weather. Describing the drawing to Eve
early this evening, & at Donbury encouraged Sachiyo
to watch 'Vicki Christina' tonight. When I came in
her face brightened, she waved & said 'Long time no
see.' Some good football this afternoon, Jets/Patriots
17th (Monday) [Oriental Horses]
Had a good talk with Korean girl at Naru. Has an
interest in art & photography, especially B&W she
told me. Doesn't like the autumn season she said,
because she had a couple of relationships fail during
that time. Asked how long it usually took me to
finish a drawing. Saw 'The King's Speech' with Kiyeon
at the Paramount, then sushi together at Sinclair
where I used to sit with Heather
18th (Tuesday) [Oriental Horses]
Talked with Kiyeon on the phone, who was worried
about a letter she received from the government. Told
her I'd sort it out with the Prime Minister. - Long
pause at the other end of the line. Sachiyo telling
me she wants to get down to 120 lbs. Even at 15 lbs
overweight she has a rather nice figure
19th (Wednesday) [Oriental Horses]
Grammar lessons, & eating potatoes at Sinclair
with Kiyeon
20th (Thursday) [Oriental Horses]
More grammar & potatoes with Kiyeon. Walked back
with her through the Temple & introduced her to
Reanne, who couldn't have been nicer. Two special
women
21st (Friday)
Gave Halley dark chocolate with hazelnut, &
took the drawing down to show her. Seemed to like
it & seemed pleased when I suggested she could help
out with 'Empress', Grammar & meatballs with Kiyeon
at Sinclair. Walked with her, past all the sparkling
towers, to her apt on Barclay, & then back again to
Burrard, where she hurried off to her language class
on Hornby. Talking to Branko, Vesna, & Marcus in the
lobby. At various times this afternoon. Finished
'Led Zepplin Biography'
