24,965 dead.
The Chinese Communists and the North Koreans
lost two million.
Canada suffered 1499 casualties, including
291 dead.
According to U.S. Secretary of State John
Foster Dulles, three million of North Korea's
ten million civilians died from neglect and
the ravages of war.

Photograping Kiyeon beside the piano in the atrium
at Sinclair, for the portrait. And then a couple of
shots of her & her friend Tamiko, outside the
station, before they headed off for snow-shoeing
in North Van. Snowing downtown this evening

Nice banter with the Starbucks girls, the Korean with
glasses & the Chinese girl just returned from a month
in Hong Kong. Bianca telling me about her boyfriend in
Hong Kong. Myle with a bad headache, after taking
vitamin & calcium supplements. Called in the
afternoon, talking $4300 handbags from Chanel. Long
talk with Kiyeon at Delany's on this rainy night,
drinking Earl Grey tea & eating chocolate chip cookies
She loved the photos of her & Tamiko
2nd (Wednesday) [Granddaughter of Hae Geun Jeong]
Reanne brings her 'Oriental Horse' to the Temple. It
was a lovely piece of work, although Myle had difficulty
for a few moments noticing the horse. I took it to the
Bay, & had to trace out the shape of the horse's nose
three or four times for Natalie. Her reaction - 'I don't
get it.' Less than an hour with Kiyeon this evening at
Sinclair
3rd (Thursday) [Granddaughter of Hae Geun Jeong]
Showing both versions of 'Oriental Horse' in the Temple
Iram seemed quite impressed with the images, & lined up
a photo of them in her digital. Discussed doing a
collaboration on 'Seahorse as a Dimension of Time with
Reanne, & awhile later with Iram who told me the title
inspired a strong vision in her imagination, which I
encouraged her to develop. Showed Bianca the drawing, &
she promised to check out 'Portraits' on the website
Korean dinner with Kiyeon in a tiny place on Bidwell,
while outside a flash of lightening & rumble of thunder
Gave her the dragonfly pin, as we drank tea at Urban
Rush on Denman
4th (Friday) [Granddaughter of Hae Geun Jeong]
Maggie in tears this morning, Myle told me, about what
she felt was unfair treatment. Cheered her up quite a
lot when I offered to exchange $400 Cdn to American
dollars at VBCE this afternoon. This afternoon Myle
texted, 'Thanks for getting Maggie her $US today :-)'
Continuing the discussion with Reanne about the
seahorse idea. Kiyeon a little tired this afternoon
Received a call from a Japanese friend who wanted to go
out for dinner. Met the two girls on Robson, but was
too tired & unprepared to go with them
5th (Saturday) [Granddaughter of Hae Geun Jeong]
Telling Myle about the title concept for the seahorse
drawing. 'Think about it,' I said to her, 'Let it flow
through you.' She paused a moment & replied, 'I can't
visualize anything.' Spent the afternoon with Kiyeon at
UBC visiting MOA, student union bldg, bookstore, Wreck
Beach, & what used to be the Barn Cafe. Coffee & tea
together on 41st near Boulevard, in the twilight
6th (Sunday) [Granddaughter of Hae Geun Jeong]
Saw 'Social Network' at Denman Cinema with Kiyeon, &
then Earl Grey tea & hot chocolate at Urban Rush. Deep
blue sky at twilight, with a lovely thin crescent moon
paired with... Venus?
7th (Monday) [Granddaughter of Hae Geun Jeong]
Myle having second thoughts about her Chanel handbag
8th (Tuesday) [Granddaughter of Hae Geun Jeong]
Girl at Starbucks from Mindinaw, is Filipino & one-
quarter Chinese. Has a pretty, charming face. Would love
to do a portrait of her. Had a nice talk with Natalie,
who described how her daughter Ali saw her grandmother
with her hair dyed, and immediately began to cry. Eating
apple slices with Kiyeon at Robson Market. Telling me
how old people in her village tell her how beautiful her
grandmother was, & how much they looked alike
9th (Wednesday) [Granddaughter of Hae Geun Jeong]
Blonde girl at Market Place telling me she loved the
website, & wants her boyfriend's father, an artist, to
check it out. Wave to Reanne, who was busy with a
customer, short talk with Myle & Mindinao girl. Trying
to lay groundwork for doing a portrait of her. Going
down escalator at VPL, faintly aware of a familiar
voice. Kiyeon laughs & grabs my arm from behind. Deep
blue sky, with ominious black clouds this evening
10th (Thursday) [Granddaughter of Hae Geun Jeong]
Myle texted, & then emailed photo of her new car
11th (Friday) [Granddaughter of Hae Geun Jeong]
Myle telling me when she loaned her camera to her sister,
she covered it in Saran Wrap first to keep it clean. The
problem was, she said, was that the lens couldn't come
out. Natalie telling me has a craving for brown goat
cheese. 'What does it taste like?' I asked. 'Kind of
sour & zingy.' Gave Kiyeon the chocolate rabbit at
Sinclair. Her last English class tonight. Talked to Susan
tonight
