Haircut by Nancy this morning. Had the best conversation
yet. Told me she's leaving for Saigon on Xmas Eve, for
her father's wedding. Reading 'Makers of Mathematics', on
the mezzanine at YVR food fair. Eve called in sick, I was
told. Gave Kaori the box of Xmas biscuits
5th (Monday) [Seahorse as a Dimension of Time]
Bianca & Maggie trying to put black boxes in an
attractive arrangement on the counter. Told them I
thought it looked like the 'Berlin Wall'. Promised
Maggie I'd bring her chocolate for her birthday, &
encouraged Bianca to go for dessert buffet, as an
Xmas treat. Myle coming back Monday, she told me
6th (Tuesday) [Seahorse as a Dimension of Time]
Laura back from South of France/Egypt. Didn't see the
pyramids due to the political situation in Cairo, but
did see a nine foot crocidile in a lake near the Nile,
and was cooled off by a hailstorm in the South of France
Met Lani at Bute & Haro. Told me she sent a link of the
website to an uncle in Ont. He e-mailed her back saying,
'Your friend is a genius.' Some pleasant banter with
Canton girl, who has a sister & a brother too, she told
me. Overcast, dark, misty
7th (Wednesday) [Seahorse as a Dimension of Time]
Reanne showing me a video clip on her iPhone, of
her pet skink eating live caterpillars, & then
licking its lips. Had quite a long talk about
everything from watercolor pencils to black holes,
dreams, memory, & quantum mechanics. Described
the concept of a drawing of a scorpion & a human
fetus, & discussed the various ways to interpret
the image. Down the rabbit hole, the title
'Scorpion of the Womb'. Would 'on' be a better
proposition?
8th (Thursday) [Seahorse as a Dimension of Time]
All the girls at the Temple looking elegant dressed to
the hilt on Gala Day. Oriental girl at Anna Sui in a long
black dress, with heels that made her six inches taller,
Maggie in a silver fur & jewelry, & Reanne too busy to
change into the dress she brought. Gave her the doc
'Strange Days' to watch. Cashier with the curly hair at
Nestors : 'I like your jacket.'
9th (Friday) [Seahorse as a Dimension of Time]
Gave Bianca some dark chocolate as an Xmas gift.
Thanked me & said she'd probably finish it today. Clear &
cool,soft sunshine with long shadows
10th (Saturday) [Seahorse as a Dimension of Time]
Suggested to Reanne Ajax or Atlas, from mythology, as
names for her skink. Told me it was eating out of her
hand & licking her fingers. As we were talking the
Oriental girl from two days ago, out of the corner of
my eye. I think she noticed, & kept coming over &
yanking kleenex from the boxes on the counter. Overcast,
a little misty, with a trace of rain
11th (Sunday) [Seahorse as a Dimension of Time]
Discussing the scorpion idea again with Reanne this
morning. Suggested calling it 'Scorpion of the Womb'.
Perfect! Early this evening rode with her on the Canada
Line to Broadway & Cambie. Had tea there with her & her
husband. Had a good discussion about Jim Morrison, music
& artistic ideas & opinions, as a big bright round moon
was shining down through the window. Describing the
seahorse to Eve, who suggested I email her a photo of
the outline

Clear, cold. Lovely blue/green twilight across the
horizon, after the sun had set
13th (Tuesday) [Seahorse as a Dimension of Time]
Dropped in on Sachiyo for the first time since last
summer. Doesn't seem quite as cheerful as she used to
to be

Reanne telling me her husband enjoyed the conversation at
Starbucks the other night, that they're opening a store on
Seymour near the Bay, & that she's getting laser surgery
on her sinus next year. Apparently she was hit on the
the nose a few times as a kid... Gave Sachiyo two dark
chocolate bar tonight. She had a bad cold, & seemed even
more tired than yesterday. Felt like it would snow, but it
rained instead
15th (Thursday) [Seahorse as a Dimension of Time]
Showed Minako the last portrait of Minori. Was totally
puzzled when I asked if she knew who was in the
background '... a famous person? Emailed Eve the outline
of the seahorse

Text from Myle this morning : 'I'm back!' Dark all day,
with a drizzle of rain
22nd (Thursday)
Long talk with Reanne this afternoon on everything from
art & photography, to blends of tea, and hockey. Described
how she met Bieksa 3 times, seen Luongo & Kesler in the
mall, & the Sedins at Starbucks near Broadway & Granville
Chatting with Minako. Able to understand her a little
better than usual
24th (Saturday)
Received an Xmas basket from Reanne, which was lovely
Showed me her photos of Bieksa from last nights game at
Rogers Arena. Gave her a tin of gunpowder green tea. Dark
clouds began to clear as I left the Temple. Through the old
windows at McD's, at the Station on Main, a lovely blue sky
with an array of clouds, white & grey, the winter branches
in the park making a sharp contrast against them in
counterpoint. Going up the escalator at Granville Station,
Chisato coming down. Touched hands with her, & she came
back up & we had a lovely little chat. Look forward to
seeing her again, in the New Year

Reanne showing me a video clip of her massaging her skink,
which she's named Aires. Iram returned the airbrush, & she
plans to start her seahorse in the next couple of days. Dark,
heavy rain

Chasing all over town through the rain, from Broadway &
Granville, to Victoria & 41st, & back downtown on SkyTrain
Heavy rain, third night in a row

Dropped in on Eve at the Post Office in Yaletown. Got off at
five & walked with her along Davie in a light rain, discussing
what colors I could use for the gears on the drawing, how her
rabbits live under her table behind the tablecloth, & how she
might be travelling to Borneo in March

Took the first shots, 30 or so, for the book idea, titled
'Vancouver 2012'. Heavy rain this evening

Attractive, charming girl at the bank, who might have been
Filipino. Waved happy new year to Sheila Mistry, who was on
the phone. At Nestors, the girl with curly hair, telling me
she was cheerfully amped up on caffeine
4th (Wednesday) [Seahorse as a Dimension of Time]
Describing to Reanne the idea for the two books being
complementary, with this years project having a white on
white cover, titled 'Vancouver 2012'. Told me she's started
the seahorse, & taken some photos on her iPhone. Wants me
to photograph the neon across the street in a heavy rain
She looked quite striking this morning. Kept telling her
this & that profile would make a great portrait. She laughed,
saying 'You're so...' Heavy overcast, dark with rain,

First chat with Bianca this year. Encouraged her to cut her
chocolate consumption in half, & then promised to bring her
brownies tomorrow...

Reanne describing how she used to shoot arrows into the
forest behind her house in Trinidad, & climb cocoanut trees,
but only half way to avoid being attacked by huge wasps that
had a Spanish-sounding name. Gave her, & Bianca, some of the
brownies. Bianca describing to me the difference between
Chinese, Korean, & Japanese soap operas
