Talked to Persia, described
the idea behind 'Karl Marx'
It was her birthday today,
told me she was born Year of
the Monkey, and that I really
SHOULD have an exhibition
Some banter with Roula this
morning. Showed her photos
from Tuesday. Compared her in
the army jacket, & a photo of
Patton: 'Angry general...
Happy general!'

6th (Tuesday)
Showed Anne the photos, &
gave her a little raspberry-
flavoured chocolate. Met
Janis coming out of the lane
on her bike. Had been
working overtime, & was
hoping to get a drafting
position at UBC. Took Shari
some med for diaherra. Was
amused when I asked if her
pj's were satin. Sweet-
smelling springtime air
this evening, walking past
Nelson Park

14th (Wednesday)
Anne putting shoes on a
mannikin. Had a long talk
about art, the fashion
industry, TV. Talked about
how she was in fashion
design, but hated the
business side. She's
orginally from Sarnia. Trees
on the Main Mall glowing
yellow/green in the sun

17th (Saturday)
Stretched paper for the
drawing. Enjoyed the
Preakness Stakes this
afternoon

19th (Victoria Day)   [The
Burial of Karl Marx]
Girl drummer describing the
bands gig in Tacoma, where
they were paid 25cents. The
night before, in Seattle,
they earned 3$. But, she
said, sales of t-shirts &
CDs 'paid for the gas'

Visited Roula this morning,
both of us covered our ears
when Shab started describing
parts of the new 'Matrix'
Anne was charming this
morning, described to her
the outline of the drawing

Roula hadn't read Oedipus
Rex, thought her ancestors
would be shocked. Ann
remembered the 'Aritzia'
bag

Long talk with Laura this
afternoon. Just how special
is she?

Sheila back at the bank,
passed 'Red Deer' girl on
Davie, road kill rodent in
the alley. Things improved
in the afternoon, met
Heather at Davie & Thurlow,
who was mailing batteries
Xpress Post to her mother,
'Italian' girl telling me
she liked sun but not heat,
& hoping it wouldn't rain
so she could mow her
mother's lawn

28th (Wednesday)   [The

Showing Laura some of the art
work... had a lot of
perceptive remarks, & seemed
to like 'Factory Girl' & the
drawing with 'detail'
Seemed to appreciate 'Eva
Braun in Miami'. Dropped by
The Bay & saw Roula. Had a
long talk with Melinda who
showed me the ring she
wanted to buy on the 3rd
floor, then sat down on the
steps of the old staircase
& showed her drawings, &
she told me of images she
remembered as a child on
Kingsway. Talked to Susan
on the phone

29th (Thursday)
Audrey at the Thrift Store,
helping me to find a shirt

30th (Friday)
Hye-Ryeon in a friendly mood,
telling me her 'second or
third priority' was to visit
Europe. The sun shining in &
out of hazy, grey overcast
Beautiful white flowers in a
clear glass vase at Sunrise
Market, Robson. The Chinese
girl, with the nice dark
hair, lifted them from the
counter so I could smell
the blossoms

when I handed her the photo
of the rat, she screeched &
jumped back, laughed, &
told me it ruined her
appetite

Perfect early summer, warm

with a brisk breeze, cool

Marx'. Liked the shoes, &
prefered the rubber rat to
the real one. 'But don't
let me influence your
decision.'

Saw 'Russian Ark', at
Granville 7, on a very hot
afternoon. Sent email to
Nayeon, & talked to Shari
for nearly hour & a half

Hottest day of the year
(above 30c downtown)
with a breeze that was
uncomfortably warm

She prefered the rubber rat
to the real one, in the
outline, & complained that
the hat sat on Ann's head
'like a mushroom'. Cynthia
phoned her & said to say

told me she studied math &
forestry at school. US Open
this afternoon, won by Furyk
at Olympia Fields, Chicago

who is suffering in the
humidity of Tokyo. Laura
came by. 'I need your opinion
on something,' I said to her

from 'Stardust' this evening
around 7. There's something

I found out walking back
under a gray sky. At Davie
& Hornby, I turn around &
say to the girl jogging up
& down, waiting for the light
to change: 'How's the jewelry
design coming along?' She
laughs, 'How do you know I
design jewelry?' 'You told
me.' 'I can't remember your
face. I usually remember
faces.' 'It was quite a few
years ago.' (10 years) She
(Helene) invited me to her
jewelry show opening on
Granville Island, made sure
I got the date right, &
jogged off

20th (Friday)   [The

Helped Shari's mom with her
luggage, to the station across the
street, & then went back & had
tea with Shari, who looked
good in a large sweat shirt
Left with cabbage rolls & a
pork chop

Anne & Laura both in black &
white, which would have made,
I mentioned to them, a great
double portrait (photo) Ann
tells me she has 'a thousand
pairs of shoes'. After
Robson Market, sat under one
of the huge weeping willows
by Lost Lagoon

26th (Thursday)
Saw 'Matrix Reloaded' on a
hot afternoon downtown. Had a
long visit with Melinda, who
has a remarkable energy, &
charming sense of humour
Talked to Myle, who didn't
have a clue really who Karl
Marx was, but is excited to
see the photo of the dead
rat! Shari called to tell me
she lost the case (surprise!)
but I was encouraged by the
way she accepted it. Hye
Ryeon being told she's too

thin & needs to eat more meat

in the glaring, hot sun. Our

epic in 12 volumes. Wants to
re-read 'To Kill a
Mockingbird', this time in
English. Overcast, muggy, it
began to drizzle a couple of
times, & then seemed to give

great with her natural hair
colour, & she did look
charming with large, round
mint green earrings, & a
summer complexion. New idea
for the 'Electra' concept

Womans's Open, a lady with

a woman with style. 'Gangs

Some heavy rain again this
afternoon at Crescent Beach,
an image of tall grass,
against a variety of summer
clouds, and blue sky, &
sands at low tide that
seemed to go out for miles,
farther than I've ever seen
Persia was charming. Told
her again how great she
looked with natural brown
hair. 'Bye sweetie.'
