letter delivered by Canada Post

Richard,

You didn't call in the morning and leave a message...

You didn't call in the afternoon and leave a message...

You called at midnight and hung up.

I would not have called you if it wasn't for call display.

It would be better if you didn't call back.

Shari

"Hey Shari, good to talk to you on the train today."     - March 6, 2014

voice message on Telus

Hey Rich it's Shar
It's not like you to be up this late
and it's definitely not like me to be calling you...

I've been thinking about you an awful lot lately
& it involves... logspiral... timing... description
and us talking
So yeah, that was my strange message

I'm inside St. Paul's Hospital
I've been here a couple of days
I would like it if you would come by
If I get moved
but I doubt it tomorrow
I'll be in another sector

There's a million and one reasons why I
could not talk to you
and now there's a gazillion more I should
and the Gamma Rae Madonna... Oh Wow
You got a new one to do
...and I miss you
I'm sorry I wouldn't talk to you
But when you get this message
you could look for me in the hospital
or try and call me at home
But I'm not going there
Just leave a message saying
where we could meet
like in a day or so
But I'll be at the hospital
for a couple of days

...I wish you were there Rich
... bye

15th (Wednesday)
Oscars books with Shari
Bought her a book on the
work of Piranesi, & myself
a Modigliani calender
B-line to UBC. Reading
'Chronicles' in a green
vinyl chair while S was
getting her front tooth
reshaped a little

17th (Friday)   [Portrait of Shari]

Showed Myle the Chinese
that K had written on a
slip of paper. She handed
it to Lisa who read it out
loud. Third Chinese lady
at the counter thought it
was hugely funny & could
hardly stop laughing
Translates to 'Playing
piano to a cow'

18th (Saturday)   [Portrait of Shari]

Met Heather at Starbucks,
Howe. Spent the next 2 hrs
checking out the music
shops

19th (Sunday)   [Portrait of Shari]

Drinking wine with Shari
this evening, who was in
a crisis frame of mind
Helped her complete the
pain clinic questionare
On the way to Skytrain,
stopped to say hi to
Myle, who was working
Gave me one of her
sedatives, wrapped in a
kleenex. Seems eager to
know if it's going to
work on me

22nd (Wednesday)
Shab working this morning. Had
just submitted her application
to UBC, & was unusally upbeat
That was nice to see. Suggested
she rent 'My Architect'. Said

to throw off 'good vibes' for
her next time I was at UBC
Myle describing an argument
with her older sister, her
arrogant attitude towards her,
& that the sister had slapped
her once & Myle had punched
her back

23rd (Thursday)
Walking south along Denman
at dusk, a dark grey bank of
cloud on the horizon, edged
with pink. Dark blue sky,
flashy neon colour along the
street. At English Bay the
water shimmering silver/blue,
Bowen Island all wreathed in
dark mists, a green light
flashing slowly, off & on
Gift from Myle this morning

27th (Monday)
Pure winter sunlight. Burnaby
Library with Shari. Chow mein
& chicken legs at a small
place named after Buddha. Two
girls working there : Oriental
: with the smile of an angel :
European, beautiful, with
lovely hands, black letter
tatoo on a forearm. Trains
passing high above, S
remarking on the gloom
expressed in the faces going
past, though they don't have
a tsunami to worry about
Dollar store on Commercial, &
then S meets a Polish girl,
Veronica, who once lived at
Station Point. Shari waves
bye at Main. Standing with
Veronica, talking, as the
escalator carried us up -
these images, & an image
from the past, enhanced, &
more deeply understood
later this evening

29th (Wednesday)
Shari leaves a message, that
she heard a thought on the
radio, something about sheeps
wool shrinking in the rain
Stretched paper for the
'Buddha' drawing, which Shari
suggested I not start till
the New Year
