14th (Tuesday)
Remarkable game from Wrigley Field
If the Cubs lose tomorrow the
incident in the 8th inning will
be remembered for years

15th (Wednesday)
Drinking green tea at Bread Garden,
Shari describing her friends
'volcano pimples' & the basic
elements of a yeast-free diet...
A steady light rain

17th (Friday)
Second day of the rain storm,
but darker than yesterday

18th (Saturday)   [FLA USA pastel]
A pause in the storm, the pavement
was dry today. A long talk with
Heather at Starbucks, Howe. She's
into the 8th volume of the letters
of R. Louis Stevenson, who she
seems enamoured with

19th (Sunday)   [FLA USA pastel]
Myle forgot the hat (again) but
Michelle came through
Photographed her across from
the old Bay Theatre. Told me
she's Irish, Russian, German &
French. Weather cleared up at
just the right time. Italian
girl is actually Indian. Her
name is Darcy. Yankees win
tonight

20th (Monday)   [FLA USA pastel]
Having problems printing
email pages to send to Mary
Taylor in England. Laura comes
to the rescue (once again)

21st (Tuesday)   [FLA USA pastel]
Talked to Laura, who has a new
job in the store. She's promised
to have four new drawings to
show me before the end of Oct, &
expects me to watch 'Red Dawn'
before then too (she recommended
it a number of weeks ago). Nancy
told me that Ho Im phoned from
Korea. Said to say 'Hi". Nice
talk with the 'other' girl at
Galloways, who was wearing a
beautiful scarf a week ago
Mailed the letter to Mary...

22nd (Wednesday)   [FLA USA pastel]
A sublime pre-sunset at English
Bay, seen from the bandstand, &

from just below the sidewalk
along Beach. Blazing sun through
a drizzling rain, dripping from
the trees, shimmering leaves
spiraling to the ground, dog
running back & forth, in ecstacy,
framed in silver, freighters
veiled in mists tinted orange &
grey, most of the sky a slate of
silvery blue with fragments of
misty cloud drifting past. At
the back of the bandstand a Van
Gogh-looking character quietly
smoking a pipe, the whole scene
arched with a full rainbow -
An hour before Persia a little
discouraged by what she called
the 'routine' of her life
Audrey telling me Mary visiting
at Xmas & New Year

23rd (Thursday)   [FLA USA pastel]

24th (Friday)   [FLA USA pastel]

25th-26th (Saturday/Sunday)
Weekend at Majuba. Three salmon
in a shallow pool at Cultus
slowly moving through the water,
with occasional burst of speed
Fish carcasses, those still
living in advanced decay. Sensed
they were aware of their own
imminent death, by instinct, had
accepted it with calm & dignity

27th (Monday)   [FLA USA pastel]
Email from Nayeon, who received
the photos. Misty rain falling
this evening

28th (Tuesday)   [FLA USA pastel]
Lonsdale Quay & Presentation House
with Shari. Whining about her back
as we climbed the hill, the view
behind us of Harbour & downtown
veiled in soft grey white mists
that shifted & changed by the
second. Arrived an hour early &
then, after lunch, found out the
gallery is closed on Tuesday. It
was okay though said S, we had an
enjoyable trip & 'You got to kill
a bee.' Had an amusing comment
about 'fat chicks' & a dozen other
observations. Myle looked good
with darker hair, she said was
coloured 'violet/red'. Dark
afternoon, with strong winds
swirling the leaves wildly
through the air

29th (Wednesday)   [FLA USA pastel]

30th (Thursday)   [FLA USA pastel]
Melinda's impression of Cher
Both of her parents were born
outside London, 'Nine or ten
years before the War.' Ideas for
the next portraits of her

31st (Friday)   [FLA USA pastel]
Talking to Roula, who said she
liked the portrait of Melinda, but
the one of Shab is still her
favourite. Girl at Galloways
dressed as a pumpkin, with a green
cap on her head, which was 'the
stem of course.'

November

Enjoyable banter with Michelle,
who told me she was reading 'The
Last Temptations of Christ'

Gave Myle some chocolate, she
gave me some wafers to eat with
my tea upstairs at the Bay
Watched an interesting Nova
about String Theory

with a smaller stump growing
sideways out of it, holding on
with an intricate tangle of roots

Took photos of Shelagh this morning on
Courthouse steps. 'Cat' was a bundle of
towels taped together. Had some fun with
it. Cool, overcast, a little misty,
threatening rain. This afternoon dropped
in on Donna at the Archives. Thought
'Debutante' was 'chilling'. Good to see
her again

Showed bakery girl a few photos. Prefered
'Unforgettable Fire'. As I left she called
out, 'Thanks for showing me the pictures!'

16th (Saturday)
Perfect late spring day, sunny with a
pleasant cool breeze

Sorting out ideas for the next drawing,
titled 'Urban Desert Mirage'. Another
great visit with Shelagh. 'Well, she had
to put her hand somewhere,' I said, in
response to some teasing about 'Memo'

21st (Thursday)
Showed Shelagh 'Eva Braun'. Very good
response. Before I showed it to her she
wanted me to tell her what inspired it
Mixed me up a little health drink with
'O.J.'
