Hogan's Alley was the area between Prior & Union streets,
running east and west, and Main & Jackson streets, running
north and south. A short walk from the heart of Chinatown,
it was home to much of Vancouver's Black community from
before 1920 until the late 1960's, when the area was
demolished to make way for the new Georgia Viaduct. At its
height in the 1940's, the black population there numbered
about 800.

The neighbourhood was home to Nora Hendrix, the
grandmother of Jimi Hendrix; who worked as a cook at
Vie's Chicken & Steak House on Union street, and who
was actively involved in the community for decades.
